Sexuality
is more than sex
Sexuality
is the timeless, faceless, unclaimed essence of our identity.
It is our entire being. Sexuality includes biological gender,
attitudes and perceptions, sense of self, relationships, sexual
practice, fantasies, concepts of love, romance and pleasure.
Sexuality is also about fears, vulnerability, and confusions.
Sexuality is mind, body and soul -- undivided.
The
norms of the society police our concept of sexuality. Deeply
rooted in our psyche, they determine our beliefs and behaviour.
We learn to avoid talking about sex or anything related to
it. |
|
| This
silence leads to confusion, since we never find the space
to explore our doubts and fears in a constructive and healthy
manner.
Through
this section we hope that you will be able to talk about and
find answers to some of your doubts, confusions and discomfort.
the first step towards feeling whole and healthy is to be
informed. Sometimes, just accurate information can calm our
fears.
Expressions
of Sexuality
- I think
/ I know that I am impotent
- I am
not sexually attractive / No one will want to have sex with
me
- I am
a married woman who has never had an orgasm
- I
fantasise about having sex with my mother / sister
- I like
to watch other people having sex
- I
have a small penis so I can never give women pleasure
- I
am lesbian
- I am
a man but I enjoy dressing up as a woman
These
are manifestations of individual sexual identities or experiences.
We rarely talk about them because we are afraid of being called
abnormal / sick. Our society restricts sex to procreation,
marriage, and heterosexuality. Any other form of sexual expression
is considered deviant and unnatural. Yet, sexuality is a very
personal space that includes the expressions mentioned above.
